About this event

As part of Black/African Heritage Month, George Mason University's Black Excellence Gala serves as an opportunity to recognize and honor the amazing contributions that Black students, faculty, and staff have made on campus or in surrounding communities.

This year's Gala theme is "Sankofa". A methephorical symbol of a bird with its head turned backwards, originated by the Akan people of Ghana. It is meant to express the importance of reaching back to knowledge gained from the past and bringing it into the present to better shape our future.

This year's Gala will include an opening and closing keynote, thoughtful presentations/performances and an award/recognition segment.

The Gala is sponsored/hosted by George Mason University's Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment, the Black Alumni Chapter, and the Black, African Heritage, and Caribbean Coalition.
